John Thomas

First African-American Drum Major at Indiana University Born in Gary, Indiana, on June 12, 1941, John Thomas grew up in Bloomington and honed a skill that led him all over the county. Winner of more than five baton twirling state titles and more than 20 competitions, Thomas joined the Indiana University Marching Band, becoming the first African-American band leader of the Marching Hundred.
